WHAT IT MEANS

Squad is your core friend group, branded — the people confirmed for every function, group chat pinned, loyalty presumed. “Squad up” assembles them; “the squad” refers to them with the gravity of a special-operations unit deploying to brunch.

“Squad goals,” the 2015 extension, was the aspirational form: pointing at a better-coordinated friend group — celebrities on a yacht, elderly friends in matching windbreakers — and declaring their bond the target state. It turned friendship itself into content with a scoreboard, which was very 2015 of everyone.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Squad's lineage runs from the military through decades of hip-hop crew culture — squads, cliques, and camps were established rap vocabulary long before the internet — with the word carrying that unit-loyalty energy into general speech through the early 2010s.

The imperial phase was 2014–2016: “squad goals” colonized Instagram captions, a certain pop star's celebrity friend group became the format's reference specimen, and brands began addressing customers as squads, which was the beginning of the end. The word settled back into casual, semi-ironic use — still fully legible, no longer a lifestyle.

HOW TO USE IT

• “Squad's assembling at 8. Wear the good jacket, we're taking one photo.”

  Correct — deployment orders, standard operating procedure.

• “Four grandmas in matching windbreakers power-walking the mall. Squad goals, sincerely.”

  Correct — the aspirational form, aimed at genuine excellence.

• “Join our savings squad!” — a bank

  Incorrect — a financial institution cannot be in your squad. The chat stays private.

• Referring to two people as a squad, generously.

  Advanced — squad-of-two recognition. Small unit, full status. Valid.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Vintage as a flex, evergreen as a word — 'squad goals' is a 2015 time capsule, but 'the squad' still assembles daily in group chats everywhere. The windbreaker grandmas remain the target state. They always were.
