WHAT IT MEANS

Aura farming is deliberately doing cool things to accumulate aura — staring pensively out windows, timing your exits, curating your mystery — the way a game character grinds a stat. The term is inherently an accusation, because farmed aura violates aura's first law: real aura is unintentional. The farmer wants the harvest without the indifference that makes it valuable.

And yet the internet's relationship to it is affectionate. Calling someone an aura farmer is teasing, not condemnation, and self-aware farming — announcing “aura farming rn” while posing dramatically at a bus stop — is its own legitimate bit. There's also elite, sincere aura farming: performing an objectively cool ritual with total commitment, at which point the farming becomes the aura.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The phrase grew out of 2024's aura-points economy as its obvious next move — once cool became a farmable currency, someone was going to industrialize it. Gaming vocabulary (“farming” XP, gold, kills) supplied the verb, and TikTok supplied the fields.

Its canonical image arrived in mid-2025, when a video of an Indonesian boy dancing with absolute deadpan composure on the prow of a racing longboat — the traditional Pacu Jalur festival — went globally viral under the caption “aura farming.” The kid's zero-effort gravity was the purest specimen the internet had ever collected; brands and athletes recreated the pose for months, sincerely farming the aura of the original farmer, which is the most 2025 sentence in this dictionary.

HOW TO USE IT

• “He stood at the balcony rail at the party for 40 minutes so someone would ask what he was thinking about. Aura farming.”

  Correct — the accusation, lovingly filed.

• “Aura farming rn,” captioned under a slow-motion walk away from nothing.
