It works as a noun (“he has rizz”), a verb (“she rizzed him up”), and an insult when negated (“negative rizz” describes a person whose attempts actively repel).

The word carved out territory adjacent to older terms like “game” but with a crucial difference: rizz is measurable in the moment and discussed like a skill rating. By 2023 the word had gone fully institutional: Oxford University Press named “rizz” its Word of the Year, citing its journey from niche streaming slang to mainstream vocabulary. That announcement — a centuries-old dictionary publisher formally recognizing a Twitch in-joke — is arguably the single funniest thing that has ever happened to the English language, and it cemented rizz as permanent vocabulary rather than a passing meme.
