WHAT IT MEANS

Delulu is delusional, worn as an outfit. It describes believing something with no supporting evidence — that your crush is secretly in love with you, that the 2% chance is basically a lock, that the situation will simply work out — and continuing to believe it on purpose, because the belief itself is fuel. The canonical proverb: “delulu is the solulu” (the delusion is the solution).

The word's trick is that the reduplication (“-lulu”) launders the sting out of “delusional.” Calling yourself delulu is not an admission of a problem; it's a manifesto — optimism past the point of data, chosen consciously, results occasionally pending. It sits somewhere between coping mechanism and life strategy, and its practitioners will tell you the win rate is better than you'd think.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Delulu was born in K-pop stan culture around 2014 — originally a jab at fans whose parasocial expectations had left the observable universe (“delulu shipper”). Within the fandom it softened from insult to self-description, because stan culture metabolizes every insult into an identity eventually.

It broke out through TikTok in 2023, decoupled from fandom entirely: “being delulu until it works” became a manifestation-adjacent lifestyle joke applied to careers, romance, and academics, and “delulu is the solulu” became its scripture. The word now covers the entire spectrum from playful self-awareness to genuinely concerning, and part of its charm is that the speaker always insists they're on the fun side of the line.

HOW TO USE IT

• “He viewed my story twice. The wedding is basically planned.”

  Correct — textbook romantic delulu, self-aware division.

• “I applied to one job, told no one, and started practicing my acceptance speech. Delulu is the solulu.”
