WHAT IT MEANS

Mewing is pressing your whole tongue against the roof of your mouth in the belief that, over time, this sharpens the jawline and restructures the face. That's the practice. The gesture is what most people actually encounter: a finger to the lips (“can't talk”) followed by tracing the jaw — meaning “I'm mewing, my silence is self-improvement, and my jawline is why.”

In classrooms the gesture became a way to comically refuse to answer a question, which is why teachers rank it among the era's most efficient chaos technologies. The underlying claim — that tongue posture can remodel an adult face — is, to put it gently, not a consensus position in orthodontics; the internet mostly stopped caring whether it works and kept it as a bit.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The name comes from British orthodontist John Mew and his son Mike, proponents of “orthotropics,” a fringe theory that facial structure is shaped by posture — tongue placement included — rather than genetics alone. The elder Mew's licence and the theory's standing have been the subject of long-running professional dispute, which did nothing to slow the internet down.

Looksmaxxing forums adopted tongue posture as free jawline homework in the late 2010s, YouTube transformation content carried it to millions, and TikTok's 2023–2024 wave converted it from protocol to gesture — the shush-and-jawline-trace becoming a schoolwide phenomenon detached from any belief in the theory. By 2025 the kids had largely declared it over, which is how you know it fully happened.

HOW TO USE IT

• (Teacher asks a question. The student shushes, traces the jawline.)

  Correct — the canonical deployment. Detention is a known side effect.

• “He's been mewing for two years. His jaw is the same. His confidence is enormous.”

  Correct — an accurate clinical summary of the entire phenomenon.

• Paying money for a mewing course.

  Incorrect — the tongue is free. The results were always vibes.

• Mewing during the yearbook photo, visible to no one, known to you.
