THE LORE

The two-note appreciative whistle is older than recorded sound — it shows up in early 20th-century cartoons and films as stock shorthand for “impressive.” The internet gave it new context: fit checks, glow-ups, and clean gameplay all get the whistle now.

“Rizz” — internet slang for charisma, popularized through streamer culture in 2022 and crowned Oxford's Word of the Year in 2023 — gave the whistle its modern name. You don't whistle at the person; you whistle at the rizz. Ours is a pure sine-wave whistle with hand-tuned pitch bends, because sampling an actual whistle would have been too easy.

HOW WE BUILT IT

The whistle is three sine-wave segments: a 300 ms rise from 720 Hz to 1850 Hz, a brief peak, then a 450 ms fall from 1900 Hz down to 480 Hz with 8 Hz vibrato — the flutter that makes it sound performed rather than generated. Underneath sits a barely-audible bed of high-passed noise (the “breath”), which is the detail that pushes it from synth-tone to human-adjacent.
