WHAT IT IS

Three short horn stabs and one long, sagging blast with vibrato — the universal sound of a moment being declared important. It is obnoxious by design and effective for exactly that reason.

THE LORE

The airhorn's journey to meme status starts in Jamaican dancehall and sound-system culture, where DJs fired horn effects to hype a track. Reggaeton and club DJs carried it through the 2000s, and then MLG montage parody culture in the early 2010s made it the official soundtrack of ironic hype: every headshot, every 360 no-scope, every “wait for it” moment got the horn.

The joke long ago outlived the montages. Today the airhorn is shorthand for manufactured excitement — used sincerely by sports arenas and ironically by everyone else. Ours is a fully synthesized horn voice, built to capture the archetype without sampling anybody's horn.

HOW WE BUILT IT

The horn voice is a stack of two detuned sawtooth waves (±9 cents), a square wave for bite, and a saw one octave down for body, all low-passed at 5.2 kHz so it honks instead of hisses. The pattern is three 160 ms blasts at 466 Hz (that's a B♭) with tight gaps, then a 950 ms final blast that sags down to 392 Hz with vibrato — the signature “dying horn” bend. A drive stage pushes the whole thing into pleasant distortion.
