WHAT IT MEANS

Brainrot is both the content and the condition: low-effort, high-compulsion internet media engineered for endless scrolling, and the cognitive state you enter after too much of it. Symptoms include a shortened attention span, a compulsion to quote nonsense, and reaching for “skibidi” in professional settings. It's a diagnosis everyone applies to themselves with weird pride — “my brainrot is terminal” is a boast.

It's also the collective name for this entire vocabulary. The “brainrot lexicon” — gyat, rizz, Ohio, sigma, 67 and their relatives — is the word-hoard of short-form video culture, and calling it brainrot is the internet's way of admitting the diet is junk food while continuing to eat. Self-awareness as a coping mechanism; a whole generation's media literacy wearing a jester hat.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The coinage is genuinely old: Henry David Thoreau used “brain-rot” in Walden in 1854, complaining that society valued shallow ideas over deep ones — proving that being mad about everyone else's degraded attention is a national tradition older than the lightbulb. The modern usage grew through gaming and forum culture in the 2010s (“this game is pure brainrot”) before short-form video gave it a golden age.

By 2024 it was the accepted name for the algorithmic-content condition, and Oxford University Press named “brain rot” its Word of the Year — two years after crowning “rizz,” meaning the dictionary establishment has now formally recognized both the vocabulary and the disease. In 2025 the term also absorbed the wave of AI-generated absurdist characters (the “Italian brainrot” menagerie of espresso-themed creatures), confirming its status as a living genre label, not just an insult.
