WHAT IT MEANS

Bussin means exceptionally good, and in practice it means the food is exceptionally good. While it can technically describe anything — a song, an outfit, a water park — the word has been so thoroughly claimed by food content that using it about anything else now carries a faint smell of wrongness, like calling a movie “delicious.”

Intensification is handled by repetition: “bussin bussin” is the certified tier, meaning the food is not just good but worth interrupting the meal to announce. One “bussin” is a review; two is a testimony.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Bussin comes from African American Vernacular English, where it had been in use long before the internet found it — related forms like “bust” for something excellent go back decades. Like a lot of AAVE, it was adopted wholesale by internet culture once short-form video gave everyone a window into everyone else's vocabulary.

The mainstream explosion came through food TikTok around 2020–2021, where taste-test and mukbang creators made it the standard superlative, and the inevitable backlash arrived on schedule: by 2022 “is it bussin or is it mid” had become the binary review scale for everything, and parents saying “bussin” at dinner had become its own genre of teenage suffering.

HOW TO USE IT

• “The mac and cheese at the function was bussin bussin.”

  Correct — maximum certification, appropriately food-directed.

• “This new album is bussin.”

  Technically legal, but the word wants to be at dinner.

• “The quarterly numbers are bussin,” said the regional manager.

  Incorrect — HR has been notified.

• “It's… fine. It's not bussin, but it's not mid. It's food.”

  Advanced — the neutral middle ground almost nobody admits exists.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Certified but aging into comfort-food status. Teenagers say it with one layer of irony, twenty-somethings with two, and parents with none, which is the natural life cycle. Still the correct word when the mac and cheese is, in fact, bussin.
