WHAT IT MEANS

Mid means mediocre — but with a contempt that “average” never carried. Calling something mid doesn't say it's bad; it says it's forgettable, which the internet considers worse. Bad things at least generate content. Mid things generate nothing: a 6/10 experience wearing a 9/10 marketing budget.

The power of mid is its finality. It's a one-syllable closed door — no elaboration, no appeal process. That's also why it's the internet's favorite bait: declaring a beloved thing mid is the cheapest engagement hack in existence, and everyone knows it, and it still works every single time.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Mid grew out of hip-hop and cannabis slang, where “mids” meant mid-grade product — not the good stuff, not the worst, the shrug in between. The shortening to a pure adjective for anything unremarkable spread through 2010s music and sports argument culture, where it sharpened into a weapon.

Its mainstream spike came in 2021–2022, boosted by wrestling promo culture — a famous AEW promo trashing “the Midwest” minted the pun and sent the word through sports Twitter at escape velocity, and TikTok's rating-everything economy did the rest. By 2023, “mid” was the default dismissal for any franchise sequel, restaurant chain, or opinion the internet had decided to bury that day.

HOW TO USE IT

• “The sequel was mid. I remembered nothing by the parking lot.”

  Correct — forgettability is the crime, not badness.

• “Hottest take: every viral fried-chicken sandwich is mid.”

  Correct — engagement bait, deployed knowingly. May start a war.

• “Your performance this quarter was mid,” said the manager.

  Incorrect — HR again. The word is for culture, not performance reviews.

• “It's not mid, it's just fine.” — a peacemaker, losing both sides

  Advanced — defending the middle is the one unforgivable position.
