ratio

noun / verb · 2017 → now

also seen as: ratioed, L + ratio

the short answer

The public defeat of getting more replies than likes — or having your reply out-like the post it corrects.

WHAT IT MEANS

A ratio is a public math-based humiliation. On any platform where replies and likes are both visible, a post with far more replies than likes has been ratioed: lots of people had something to say, and almost none of them liked what they read. The reply-to-like ratio is the internet's most honest metric — outrage counted against approval.

The second form is single-combat: replying to a bad post with just the word “ratio” (often “L + ratio”) is a challenge. If your reply out-likes the original post, the ratio is certified, the original poster has lost a duel they never agreed to, and the score is publicly visible forever. It's dueling culture for people who will never leave their rooms.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The concept was formalized on Twitter around 2017, when users noticed that terrible takes produced a signature shape: replies dwarfing likes. Being “ratioed” became shorthand for having posted something the public rejected at scale, and the metric was so intuitive that it spread to every platform with visible counts.

TikTok and YouTube comment sections gamified it in the early 2020s — “ratio” as a reply became a self-contained challenge, often stacked with modifiers (“L + ratio + didn't ask”) in the great tradition of internet insult combos. The format has cooled from its 2021 peak but the underlying math remains undefeated: the ratio sees all, and the ratio does not lie.

HOW TO USE IT

  • “400 replies, 12 likes. He's getting ratioed into the shadow realm.”

Correct — the classic observational form.

  • “L + ratio + the crumbs were, in fact, left.”

Correct — combo culture, referencing 'ate' like a scholar.

  • Explaining to your grandmother that she was ratioed in the family group chat.

Incorrect — family group chats have no likes. She cannot be ratioed. Apologize.

  • Posting “ratio” and getting ratioed by the original post.

Advanced — the reverse ratio. The most public L in the game.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Certified, though the dueling form is past peak. The observational form — noticing a post drowning in quote-tweets and unkind replies — is permanent internet literacy. The scoreboard changed apps; the math never will.
