WHAT IT MEANS

Drip is exceptional style — the outfit, the jewelry, the shoes, the whole presentation, assessed as a single liquid asset. Someone with drip doesn't just dress well; they look assembled on purpose, with pieces that catch light and attention. “Drip check” is the request to display it, usually answered with a slow pan from shoes to chain.

The metaphor does real work: drip implies abundance (style dripping off you) and effortlessness (liquid doesn't try). It's distinct from aura — aura is presence, drip is inventory — and the internet keeps both books separately. You can be dripped out with no aura, which is a tragedy, and aura'd up in a hoodie, which is a flex.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Drip in the style sense broke out of Atlanta rap culture in the late 2010s — the sound and its vocabulary dominated that era, and “drip” rode a wave of 2018-era anthems into the mainstream, quickly becoming the standard word for visible, expensive, deliberate style. Earlier regional uses exist (slang etymology is always contested), but Atlanta made it national.

By 2019–2020 it was fully general: sneaker culture, fashion TikTok, and gaming skins all adopted drip, and the word crossed into ironic use for any outfit at all — a toddler in a puffer jacket has drip, a pigeon with a crumb has drip. The irony expanded the word instead of killing it, which is how the durable ones survive.

HOW TO USE IT

• “Drip check.” (the slow pan begins, shoes to chain)

  Correct — the ceremonial inspection, properly conducted.

• “The grandpa at the bus stop has crazy drip — the hat, the cardigan, the watch.”

  Correct — drip recognizes no age bracket. Elders often carry the most.

• “Business casual is my drip,” said with a lanyard on.

  Incorrect — the lanyard voids the claim. Some inventories don't qualify.

• “The drip is fire but the aura is negative — he keeps checking if we noticed.”

  Advanced — dual-ledger accounting. Checking deletes the aura. See 'aura,' first law.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Certified — slightly past its 2019 fever but settled into the permanent style lexicon alongside “fit” and “fresh.” The ironic uses (pigeon drip, toddler drip) keep it young. Wear the chain; do not check whether we noticed the chain.
