WHAT IT MEANS

Phat meant excellent — full, rich, impressive — and its entire genius lived in the spelling. Spoken, it was identical to “fat”; written, the ph- told you it was praise. A phat beat, a phat ride, a phat sound system: the word certified quality with a wink only the literate-in-slang could see.

It was the 90s' great spelling flex, part of the era's broader tradition of respelling as style (boyz, gangsta, kool). The inevitable folk backronyms — “pretty hot and tempting” among them — came later, invented to explain a spelling that never needed explaining: it just looked cooler.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Phat circulated in hip-hop vocabulary from the 1980s, with the spelling establishing itself in music journalism and street wear through the early 90s — Phat Farm, the fashion label founded in 1992, put it on storefronts, and by mid-decade the word was fully mainstream.

Its decline was standard-issue: saturation, parental adoption, and the drift of praise vocabulary toward the next thing. By the 2000s it read as dated; today it's a pure period piece, instantly evocative of baggy jeans and burned CDs, and still genuinely fun to say.

HOW TO USE IT

• “That bassline is phat.” — a producer, 1995, correctly

  Correct — native habitat: studio praise, ph- implied by tone.

• “Phat setup,” said of a friend's absurd monitor arrangement, in costume.

  Correct — modern deployment, irony visible from space.

• Explaining the spelling to someone mid-compliment.

  Incorrect — if you have to explain the ph, the moment has passed.

• Writing it in a birthday card to someone born in 1985.

  Advanced — targeted nostalgia strike. They will hear a Discman click.
