WHAT IT MEANS

Da bomb meant the absolute best — the peak, the pinnacle, the item against which other items were measured. A restaurant could be da bomb, a mixtape could be da bomb, and in the word's late period, a burrito could be officially marketed as da bomb by a national chain, which is roughly when the kids knew it was over.

The “da” is structurally essential. “The bomb” is a description; “da bomb” is a verdict. It was the 90s' reigning superlative — the exact seat “fire” occupies today — and no praise word since has detonated with more total confidence.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

“Bomb” as slang for excellent runs back through decades of Black American vernacular, but the “da bomb” formation exploded through early-90s hip-hop culture — a 1993 Kris Kross album carried the exact spelling — and crossed into full suburban saturation by the mid-90s, achieving that final form of 90s ubiquity: the school-hallway catchphrase.

Like most superlatives, it died of adoption: once parents, sitcoms, and value menus were all deploying it, the word's coolness budget was spent, and by the mid-2000s it survived only in ironic use. It remains the reference specimen of 90s praise — the word every throwback joke reaches for first.

HOW TO USE IT

• “This mac and cheese is da bomb.” — someone's mom, 1997, correct

  Correct — period-accurate deployment at the family table.

• “The new place is honestly da bomb,” said today, with one raised eyebrow.

  Correct — the modern register: nostalgia, worn knowingly.

• Using it in 2026 with zero irony and full sincerity.

  Incorrect — the costume must be visible. Otherwise it's just 1996 in here.

• “Da bomb dot com.” — the deluxe remix, adding a whole defunct internet
