WHAT IT MEANS

Props is respect, publicly awarded — short for “proper respect” or “propers,” and deployed when someone deserves explicit credit: “props to whoever organized this,” “mad props for the save.” It's praise with a civic quality; giving props is putting the credit on the record.

Its register has migrated from street to universal: props now lives comfortably in group chats, classrooms, and — its final form — corporate stand-ups, where it survived by being the one piece of 90s slang that sounds professional. The word literally means giving credit, so every workplace adopted it.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The lineage runs through “propers” — famously requested in a certain 1967 soul anthem about respect — into hip-hop culture, where “props” was established currency by the late 80s and “mad props” became the standard maximal form of the 90s.

It mainstreamed through the 90s alongside hip-hop itself and then did what almost no slang manages: institutionalized without dying. Five decades from coinage, “props to the team” appears in earnings-call adjacent emails, and the word shrugs and cashes the check. Respect, after all, was always the point.
