The word's charge has fully inverted from its source material. Coined to describe fandom gone dangerously too far, it was reclaimed by fandoms as a badge — “I stan” now just means enthusiastic, loyal support, with the cautionary origin story humming quietly underneath. The internet knows where the word came from; it stans anyway.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The word comes from “Stan,” Eminem's 2000 single — a story-song about an obsessive fan whose letters escalate from devotion to tragedy. The title character's name became fandom shorthand within music forums almost immediately: a “stan” was a fan who'd crossed the line.

Through 2010s stan Twitter — the K-pop, pop-girl, and hip-hop fan armies who industrialized streaming, trending, and comment-section warfare — the word shed its warning label and became the standard term for devoted fandom. Oxford dictionaries added it (noun and verb) in 2017, formally certifying one of the stranger journeys in slang: from cautionary tale to job description in under two decades.
