WHAT IT MEANS

Sus means suspicious or suspect — someone or something that doesn't add up and probably shouldn't be trusted. It ranges from playful (“the way he left right before the bill came was sus”) to genuinely wary (“that link is sus, don't click it”), covering the full spectrum from social micro-crimes to actual malware.

Post-2020, the word carries a permanent gaming echo: being sus means being the impostor — the one performing normalcy while up to something. That's the useful nuance that separates it from plain “suspicious”: sus implies performance, someone acting natural conspicuously. The vent was right there and you were standing next to it.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Sus has been British and American slang for “suspect” since at least the mid-20th century — British policing had “sus laws” by the 1930s, and the shortening lived in hip-hop and regional slang for decades. It was already internet vocabulary by the 2010s.

Then Among Us happened. The 2018 social-deduction game exploded during 2020 lockdowns via Twitch, and its entire gameplay loop — accusing crewmates of being the impostor — ran on the word. “Red sus” became a global catchphrase, the associated “amogus” meme mutated the game's bean-shaped astronaut (and the 📮 emoji) into shorthand for the whole phenomenon, and “sus” was permanently welded into the vocabulary of everyone who was online that year, plus their younger siblings, plus eventually their parents.

HOW TO USE IT

• “He said he 'was just in the area.' We live forty minutes from anywhere. Sus.”

  Correct — the social micro-crime tier.

• “New account, no picture, asking for my login? Extremely sus.”

  Correct — the genuinely-protect-yourself tier.

• Calling a quiet coworker sus for eating lunch alone.

  Incorrect — introversion is not impostor behavior. Let them eat.

• “You've been acting real sus since the cookies went missing,” said to a dog with crumbs on its face.

  Advanced — the evidence is complete and the suspect cannot testify.

Certified, permanent, and fully cross-generational — one of the few words on this list your parents use correctly. The Among Us era welded it into the language for good. Red was, and remains, sus.
