WHAT IT MEANS

An NPC — non-player character — is a person who seems to run on dialogue trees: predictable opinions, stock phrases, no evidence of an inner life beyond the script. Calling someone an NPC says they're an extra in the simulation, repeating ambient lines (“Mondays, am I right?”) while the actual story happens elsewhere.

“NPC energy” and “NPC behavior” soften it into a read on specific actions rather than a whole identity: standing motionless in a doorway, repeating a slogan you heard an hour ago, walking in a perfectly straight line to a destination. It's the exact inverse of main character energy, and the two form the internet's favorite unlicensed personality test.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The term is as old as role-playing games — Dungeons & Dragons had non-player characters in the 1970s, video games inherited them, and everyone has met a video game villager who says the same three lines forever. The insult version surfaced in gaming forums and hit mainstream meme status in 2018 with the “NPC Wojak” — a grey, expressionless face representing people who supposedly can't think for themselves, which every side of every argument immediately applied to the other side.

The word then got a bizarre second act: in 2023, “NPC streaming” became a genuine profession, with creators like PinkyDoll performing robotic loops (“ice cream so good”) in response to paid gifts — humans deliberately acting like NPCs for money, monetizing the insult itself. At which point the meaning fully closed its loop and the word became permanent.

HOW TO USE IT

• “I said 'how's it going' and he said 'it's Monday for sure.' NPC dialogue.”

  Correct — ambient stock phrases are the tell.

• “Every opinion he has is the top comment from somewhere else. NPC behavior.”

  Correct — the script is showing.

• Calling someone an NPC because they disagree with you specifically.

  Incorrect — that's not what the word is for, and statistically, you might be their NPC.

• Standing perfectly still in a doorway until your friend says “NPC moment,” then unfreezing.

  Advanced — voluntary NPC roleplay. The bit always lands.
