vibe check

also seen as: vibes, failed the vibe check
the short answer
A spot inspection of the energy — of a person, a room, or a plan. Pass and things proceed; fail and everyone quietly knows.
WHAT IT MEANS
A vibe check is a spot inspection of energy — pausing to assess whether a person, room, plan, or situation feels right. People pass vibe checks by radiating good energy; they fail them by being off in ways that resist explanation but convince everyone instantly. The check can be administered on others (“vibe check: how are we feeling?”) or the environment (“the vibes in this restaurant are off”).
Failing is generally not a moral judgment — a place can fail, a Tuesday can fail, you can fail your own vibe check and cancel plans accordingly. The framework's genius is giving intuition a bureaucratic name: everyone has always made these snap energy assessments; now they have paperwork.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
“Vibe” has generational depth — good vibrations were 1960s counterculture currency — but the “vibe check” construction spiked through meme culture in 2019, initially as an absurdist bit: cartoon characters administering surprise vibe checks, often violently, to those with insufficient vibes.
The meme faded; the tool stayed. Through the 2020s “vibe check” settled into sincere everyday use as shorthand for reading energy, and “the vibes” became a full evaluative system (immaculate vibes, rancid vibes, vibes-based decision-making). It now underwrites an entire worldview in which data is optional and the vibes are load-bearing.
HOW TO USE IT
“Quick vibe check before I bring him to the group dinner — how are we feeling?”
Correct — pre-screening. The council will assess.
“The apartment was perfect on paper but failed the vibe check. Hallway felt haunted.”
Correct — vibes overruling data, as is their right.
“Your quarterly vibe check is scheduled for Thursday at 2.”
Incorrect — institutionalized vibes are dead vibes. HR cannot hold this instrument.
Canceling plans because you failed your own vibe check, and saying exactly that.
Advanced — self-administered, honestly reported. Everyone understands completely.
VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?
Certified — the meme died so the tool could live. “Vibe check” and its parent noun now run half of casual decision-making, and this section of every entry is named after it. The vibes, as ever, know things first.
