WHAT IT MEANS

Bling is flashy jewelry — diamonds, chains, watches — and by extension the whole aesthetic of visible, light-catching wealth. The word is onomatopoeia for a gleam: bling is the sound a diamond would make if physics cooperated, and for a few years the culture agreed that it did.

“Bling bling” is the full ceremonial form; “blinged out” converts it to a state. It's the ancestor of drip's jewelry department — where drip covers the whole fit, bling was specifically the hardware, appraised by sparkle per square inch.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The word belongs to New Orleans: a 1999 single titled “Bling Bling” from the Cash Money Records camp minted it, and the term detonated through hip-hop and then all of celebrity culture in the early 2000s — award shows, tabloids, and morning television all adopted it within a couple of years.

Its mainstream career was spectacular and brief: by 2003 it was in major dictionaries, by 2005 it was in car commercials, and by 2008 it was retired from cool — the full lifecycle in under a decade. It remains the definitive word of 2000s excess, permanently associated with rhinestone flip phones.
