WHAT IT MEANS
Crunk described maximum party energy — a room, a crowd, or a person operating at full hype, bass-forward, volume nonnegotiable. To get crunk was to commit to the function entirely; a crunk track was one engineered to cause that commitment. The word sounds like what it means: cranked, drunk on energy, consonants colliding.
It was also a genre: crunk music, the Southern rap style built on shouted hooks and seismic 808s, engineered specifically for rooms trying to reach the state the word names. Word and genre certified each other — the music got you crunk; being crunk demanded the music.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
Crunk came out of Southern hip-hop — Atlanta and Memphis scenes were using it by the mid-90s — but its imperial phase arrived 2003–2005, when Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz took the sound national and the word became inescapable: on the radio, at every party, and eventually on shelves as a branded energy drink, the most 2004 sentence available.
