WHAT IT MEANS

Chat is the invisible audience you address as though your life were a livestream. Streamers say “chat, what do we think?” to thousands of real viewers; the slang usage keeps the address and deletes the audience — “chat, is this real?” asked alone, in a kitchen, of no one. It converts any moment into content by implying a crowd that isn't there.

“Chat, is this real?” is the canonical form — deployed at anything surprising — followed by “chat, we're cooked” (group despair, population: you) and “thanks chat” (gratitude to the void). Linguists have had genuine public debates about whether “chat” constitutes a new form of address for an imagined collective; the kids using it are aware of none of this and would find it very funny.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The address comes directly from Twitch culture, where speaking to “chat” as a collective entity has been standard streamer grammar since the 2010s — chat is a character in every stream, with moods, running jokes, and collective opinions the streamer narrates back (“chat is convinced I should do it”).

As streaming became the default entertainment of a generation, the address migrated offline around 2023 — kids raised on streams began saying “chat” IRL, half as parody of their streamers, half as reflex, and clips of children addressing empty rooms as chat became their own genre. It has settled in as the era's purest linguistic artifact: proof that for a generation, the ambient presence of an audience is the natural state of experience.

HOW TO USE IT

• “Chat, is this real?” — at a triple rainbow, alone

  Correct — the canonical form, correctly aimed at the void.

• “Chat, we are so cooked,” announced to a study group of three.

  Correct — small real groups may be deputized as chat.

• Addressing an actual work meeting as “chat.”

  Incorrect — the meeting has a name and an agenda. It is not chat. Yet.

• “Thanks chat,” after your empty apartment fails to answer a question.

  Advanced — gratitude to the imagined collective. The parasociality is complete and self-aware.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Certified — the word is the era. Long after 67 fades, linguists will point at “chat” as the moment the audience became a grammatical person. Chat, we were here when it happened.
