WHAT IT MEANS

Wack means bad — lame, weak, substandard, failing to meet the minimum. It is the official antonym of dope, and together they formed hip-hop's original quality-control system: everything submitted to the culture got sorted into one bin or the other.

Wack carries a specific flavor of disappointment: not catastrophic failure (that's a fail) but unworthiness — the diss for things that had every chance to be good and chose otherwise. “That's wack” remains one of the most efficient ways in English to decline respect.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Wack comes out of 1980s hip-hop and graffiti culture — where “wack” writers and “wack” MCs were those who couldn't meet the craft's standard — with the term fully established by the era's canonical records and battles. An infamous late-80s anti-drug campaign co-opted the word, which the culture found, itself, deeply wack.

It rode through the 90s as the standard-issue negative verdict and never fully retired: unlike its partner dope, it dipped toward dated in the 2010s, but the 2020s brought it back into steady rotation — proof that the need to call things wack is renewable across generations.

HOW TO USE IT

• “They moved the party to a place with a dress code. Wack.”

  Correct — unworthiness, formally declared.

• “The sequel was wack and I can prove it with a chart.”

  Correct — the verdict, with optional supporting materials.

• “Don't be wack!” — a brand, trying

  Incorrect — the word judges brands; it does not work for them.

• “Dope or wack?” as a complete review framework for anything.

  Advanced — the original binary, still fully operational after forty years.

Cooling but sturdy — a graffiti-era verdict still stamping Ls in the 2020s. Its partner dope gets more airtime, but every generation rediscovers that some things simply need to be called wack.
