yeet

verb / exclamation · 2014 → 2019 peak

also seen as: yeeted, yote

the short answer

To throw something with full force and zero ceremony — or the shout that accompanies the throw. Occasionally, a whole philosophy of letting go.

WHAT IT MEANS

Yeet is the act of throwing something with maximum force and minimum ceremony — and the shout released at the moment of launch. A crumpled paper toward a distant bin, a controller toward a couch, a water balloon toward a sibling: all are yeeted, and the word is both the verb and the sound effect.

It grew a second, looser life as a philosophy of enthusiastic release — yeeting yourself into a pool, a new hobby, or a questionable decision. The joke past tense “yote” is community-canon grammar, invented because a word this chaotic deserved an irregular conjugation.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Yeet's modern era began on Vine in 2014, where a clip of a dance move performed with a triumphant “YEET” spread the word as an exclamation of force and confidence. The dance faded; the shout stayed.

Through 2016–2019 the throwing sense took over — captioning any object's violent departure — and the word became one of the defining terms of its internet generation, complete with linguistic think-pieces about “yote.” The generation that spread it has since aged it into fond legacy vocabulary: not current, never forgotten, still yelled instinctively when something leaves a hand at speed.

HOW TO USE IT

  • “He yeeted the paper from across the room. It went in. The class stood.”

Correct — force, distance, and ceremony in perfect balance.

  • “Yeeted my phone onto the bed and it bounced into the radiator. The universe heard the confidence.”

Correct — the word accepts all outcomes. Physics files its own report.

  • “We're yeeting synergy into Q4!”

Incorrect — the word died a little. Put it down gently.

  • “What's past tense?” “Yote.” “That can't be right.” “Yote,” the room confirmed.

Advanced — community grammar, ratified by consensus. The linguists lost.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Cooling into legend — the kids have moved on, but yeet achieved the rare pension of permanent recognition: everyone knows it, everyone can still hear it. The slide whistle on this page is the official trajectory audio. Yote well, old friend.
