WHAT IT MEANS

Bruh is a one-syllable review of a situation that has exceeded commentary. It expresses disbelief, disappointment, exhaustion, or awe — sometimes all four — and its meaning is carried entirely by delivery: sharp and loud for outrage, long and flat (“bruhhh”) for despair, whispered for witnessing something truly cursed. Said with dead eyes, it's a complete sentence and a complete worldview.

The “bruh moment” formalizes it: an event so absurd or deflating that only the word will do. No elaboration exists or is needed. Where newer slang cycles in and out monthly, bruh is infrastructure — the load-bearing wall of reaction vocabulary that every newer term is built around.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Bruh descends from “brother” through Black American English, where forms like “bruh” and “brer” are documented back to the late 1800s — it is comfortably the oldest word in this dictionary, with over a century of continuous use as a term of address before the internet repurposed it as a reaction.

The reaction usage went supernova in the Vine era of the mid-2010s — one legendary clip of a man collapsing after a basketball loss, captioned by an anguished “bruh,” did heavy lifting — and the “bruh moment” meme of the late 2010s completed the conversion from greeting to verdict. It has since fused with the 🗿 moai emoji as its official face: stone, eternal, unimpressed. Our BRUH sound — a single saturated downward womp — is the audio portrait of that exact feeling.

HOW TO USE IT

• “The teacher moved the test to today.” “Bruh.”

  Correct — disbelief tier. Nothing more is required.

• “Bruhhhhh,” at length, horizontally, to the ceiling.

  Correct — despair tier. The vowel stretches to fit the damage.

• “Bruh” in a formal apology.

  Incorrect — there are maybe three words less apologetic in English.

• Responding to a 4-paragraph explanation with “bruh” and nothing else.
