WHAT IT MEANS
Bae is your significant other, crush, or — during its peak — anything beloved at all: bae the person, but also pizza bae, Netflix bae, and “this blanket is bae.” A shortening of “babe/baby,” it compressed affection into three letters optimized for captions and texts.
The folk etymology — “Before Anyone Else” — is a backronym invented after the fact, and knowing that is part of fluency: the acronym story is charming, widely repeated, and wrong, which makes it a perfect piece of internet lexicography in itself.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
Bae circulated in Black American vernacular through the 2000s as a natural clipping of babe, appearing in songs and everyday speech well before its meme era. The internet found it in the early 2010s, and by 2013–2014 it was everywhere — boosted by viral formats (“bae caught me slippin'”) and a Pharrell single that put it on pop radio.
