bae

noun · 2013 → 2016 peak

the short answer

Your significant other or crush — a shortening of 'babe' that briefly became the internet's official term of endearment.

WHAT IT MEANS

Bae is your significant other, crush, or — during its peak — anything beloved at all: bae the person, but also pizza bae, Netflix bae, and “this blanket is bae.” A shortening of “babe/baby,” it compressed affection into three letters optimized for captions and texts.

The folk etymology — “Before Anyone Else” — is a backronym invented after the fact, and knowing that is part of fluency: the acronym story is charming, widely repeated, and wrong, which makes it a perfect piece of internet lexicography in itself.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Bae circulated in Black American vernacular through the 2000s as a natural clipping of babe, appearing in songs and everyday speech well before its meme era. The internet found it in the early 2010s, and by 2013–2014 it was everywhere — boosted by viral formats (“bae caught me slippin'”) and a Pharrell single that put it on pop radio.

Saturation followed the standard arc: brands started calling products bae around 2015, think-pieces litigated the acronym myth, and sincere usage cooled by 2017. It remains fully understood and lightly used — one of those words that defines its half-decade so precisely that saying it is basically carbon dating yourself.

HOW TO USE IT

  • “Movie night with bae.” — 2014, caption of record

Correct — peak-era usage, affection fully compressed.

  • “Pizza is bae,” — also 2014, also correct at the time

Correct — the object-affection extension. The era loved things loudly.

  • “Before Anyone Else, actually—” — someone, about to be wrong confidently

Incorrect — the backronym is folklore. Charming folklore, but folklore.

  • Calling your partner of ten years bae, sincerely, as the word you met during.

Advanced — vocabulary loyalty. The word retired; your usage is grandfathered. Keep it.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Vintage — the definitive affection word of the mid-2010s, now semi-retired with full honors. Its successors (pookie, my love, an emoji chosen with care) each do a piece of its job. The backronym remains beautifully fake.

Status: 📼 VINTAGE retired — wear it like a costume. Last reviewed August 2026.
