WHAT IT MEANS

Ghosting is ending a relationship, friendship, or conversation by pure disappearance — no breakup text, no explanation, no goodbye. The ghoster simply stops existing in your channels: messages go unanswered, calls go nowhere, and the relationship is declared over by silence, unilaterally, at an unannounced date.

The word now covers every arena where humans flake: friends ghost group plans, employers ghost applicants after four interviews, contractors ghost half-tiled bathrooms. “Soft ghosting” names the technicality-based variant — liking your message but never replying, a receipt of life with no delivery of presence.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

Sudden-disappearance breakups are as old as courtship, but the term crystallized in the early 2010s as texting became the primary relationship medium and the silence became visible, timestamped, and screenshotable. “Ghosting” gave the experience a name right as read-receipts gave it evidence.

It went fully mainstream around 2015, when celebrity breakup coverage and a wave of dating-app think-pieces adopted the word, and dictionaries followed within a couple of years. It has since become permanent cross-generational vocabulary — one of the few slang terms your HR department also uses, because candidates and companies now ghost each other in roughly equal volume.

HOW TO USE IT

• “We had three great dates and then he evaporated. Fully ghosted.”

  Correct — the canonical romantic vanishing.

• “The plumber ghosted us mid-renovation. The pipes remain theoretical.”

  Correct — commerce ghosting. The word covers all abandonments.

• “I ghosted my dentist.” — you, about a cleaning you were scared to reschedule

  Technically correct, and the dentist deserves better. Call them.

• Returning after months with “sorry, been so busy” like no time passed.

  Advanced — the zombie arc: a ghost returning to haunt. Universally recognized, rarely forgiven.

Certified and permanent — the behavior predates the word, the word outlasts every app it happens on. Ghosting people is an L; the word itself is essential vocabulary. If you're mid-ghost on someone right now: the two-sentence goodbye text costs less than the guilt. Go send it.
