WHAT IT MEANS

Fanum tax is the portion of your food a friend is entitled to take simply because they're there. It is not theft — that's the entire legal theory. A tax implies legitimacy, inevitability, and the pointlessness of resistance: the fries were always going to be partially theirs, and the taking is conducted openly, with eye contact.

As a verb, to fanum tax someone is to collect: reach over, take the nuggets, offer no compensation. The term gave a name to one of humanity's oldest social contracts — the friend who never orders fries but always eats fries — and naming it was somehow both an accusation and a forgiveness.

WHERE IT CAME FROM

The tax is named for Fanum, a streamer in the AMP collective around Kai Cenat, whose recurring bit — walking into rooms mid-stream and taking a share of whoever's food was nearest, calmly, as a matter of policy — was clipped relentlessly through late 2022 and 2023 until the behavior became a noun.

It then achieved something almost no slang achieves: a canonical anthem. In December 2023, a novelty song stitching the era's entire brainrot lexicon together — fanum tax, gyat, rizz, sigma and the rest — went catastrophically viral, and “sticking out your gyat for the rizzler” became the unofficial national anthem of middle school. The song aged the vocabulary by five years in five weeks, which is why fanum tax now reads as slightly retro despite being genuinely recent.

HOW TO USE IT

• “I ordered a large specifically to survive the fanum tax and still went home with half.”

  Correct — planning around the tax is fluency.

• “He fanum taxed my birthday cake. At my birthday.”

  Correct — the tax respects no occasion.

• Citing fanum tax while taking food from a stranger.

  Incorrect — the tax requires friendship jurisdiction. Otherwise it's just crime.

• Leaving exactly three fries in the box, pre-taxed, and sliding it across the table unprompted.

  Advanced — voluntary compliance. The auditors are moved.

VIBE CHECK: IS IT STILL COOL?

Cooling as slang, permanent as law. Kids say it with heavy irony now — the anthem cooked it — but the concept it names is eternal, and everyone still knows exactly which friend is the taxman. Some vocabulary retires into the culture instead of out of it.
